Ricky Gervais and Prince Harry have had a surprising friendship over the years, with the Duke of Sussex leaving the comedian stunned by a royal request.

Prince Harry once left Ricky Gervais stumped with a surprising request following one of his comedy shows.

 Ricky, who turns 63 today, met up with the Duke of Sussex after performing his Science stand-up show at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2010.

On his blog, the comedian wrote at the time: “Hammersmith was great… Had a drink after the show with Chris Martin and Prince Harry. 

As you do.

“Harry was trying to persuade me to come to Afghanistan to perform to the troops. 

I said I was too scared. He said I could do Basra, which was the safest place. Yeh, the safest place out of all the other places in a war zone… I take risks with my comedy, not my vital organs. I said I’d think about it.

“On the day of the gig he wound me up by sending me a text saying that he was bringing his gran. I was obviously a bit panicked. She would definitely not have enjoyed the show.

“At the after-show he got me to sign a beer mat for her. ‘To Liz II, Cheers! Ricky Gervais’ (true). I will be checking eBay all week in case she is making money off me. I can’t help but think that her signing a beer mat to me would be worth slightly more.”

Ricky and Harry appear to have had a friendly relationship over the years, with the comedian even texting him on the day of Prince William’s wedding to Princess Kate.

In a blog entry shared in April 2011, the After Life creator quipped: “I sent Prince Harry a text today offering to gag up his best man speech. (True.) He said he was fine… I also reminded him it wasn’t fancy dress.

“On a serious note; I really like Harry. I like William too and really wish the happy couple all the best, as I would anyone on their wedding day. Congrats Will and Kate.”

While Ricky was complimentary about William and Harry, he later took a swipe at the Royal Family telling them to “shove the knighthood”.

In a controversial 2018 Facebook post, the David Brent actor wrote: “Dear The Royal Family, I am the son of an immigrant labourer who didn’t have a pot to p**s in till I was 40.

“Now I’m Britain’s most successful international comedian and I p**s in anything I want. You can shove the knighthood though. How about a lordship? Love your work. Ricky.”

The post divided fans, while some pointed out that he was “joking” and “attempting to be humorous”, others did not see the funny side.

One user fumed: “Very controversial if you ask me,” and another echoed: “I used to think you were funny but you’re not. You’re a foul-mouthed prat.”
